Colección de 18 viñetas del dibujante José Valdés Cadilla. Esta colección se publicó en el periódico <em>La voz</em> de Nueva York entre marzo y julio de 1938. Casi todas las imágenes vienen acompañadas de un texto escrito que ayuda a explicar las sutilezas de la escena. Trece de estas imágenes forman parte una colección titulada “Estampas de Harlem” y son escenas costumbristas, irónicas, críticas y/o humorísticas que retratan a los vecinos del barrio. Estas viñetas documentan la vida cotidiana y también los retos y logros de esa vecindad mayoritariamente hispana y latina. Cuatro dibujos conmemoran fechas y eventos especiales: el séptimo aniversario de la República Española, el homenaje a las madres españolas, el segundo aniversario de la Guerra Civil o el primero de Mayo. El retrato de Fernando de los Ríos es una imagen inédita que pertenece a una colección particular. <br />Los pocos datos que se conocen sobre José Valdés Cadilla provienen del censo de los Estados Unidos. Nació en San Juan (Puerto Rico) en 1908, su madre era puertorriqueña y su padre español. José y sus cuatro hermanxs se quedaron huérfanos muy pronto y se mudaron a vivir a Arecibo con unos tíos. A collection of eighteen sketches by José Valdés Cadilla. This collection was published in the newspaper <em>La voz</em> (New York) from April through July of 1938. Every image is accompanied by a written description that helps explain the nuances within the drawing. Thirteen of the images are part of a collection entitled “Estampas de Harlem” (“Scenes from Harlem”). These ironic, critical, and/or humoristic scenes capture the neighborhood residents and their local customs. These sketches illustrate everyday life, the customs and festivities, but also the difficulties, challenges, and achievements of the primarily Hispanic and Latino community. <br />There are four drawings that commemorate special dates and events: the seventh anniversary of the Spanish Republic, a tribute to Spanish mothers, the second anniversary of the Civil War, and International Workers Day. The portrait of Fernando de los Ríos has never been published as it belongs to a private collection. <br />There is little data about Puerto Rican artist José Valdés Cadilla. He was born in San Juan (Puerto Rico) in 1908. His mother was Puertorrican and his father was from Spain and worked at the tobacco factory. José and his four siblings were orphaned in childhood and moved to Arecibo to live with some relatives. In the 1930s Valdés Cadilla was living in New York. In 1953 he still lived in the city as he painted an allegorical fresco for Julia de Burgos´ funeral services. <span>The newspaper <em>La voz</em> described him as a “bohemian in permanent regeneration, Valdés Cadilla has lived the tragedy of many Hispanics in this merciless Babel, and he knows about the cruel bite of New York´s pain” (La voz 1938-03-26, p. 12). </span>Until now, it has been impossible to obtain any additional information about this talented artist and creator of this short-lived but brilliant collection of sketches that offers an exceptional panorama of everyday life in Harlem during the 1930s. El texto hace referencia al apoyo de Alemania e Italia al bando nacional y al abandono de la República por parte de las potencias democráticas, con mención explícita a la indiferencia de Europa y el “egoísmo yanqui”.
This sketch was published in honor of the seventh anniversary of the proclamation of the Spanish Republic. The figure depicts “the invincible Spanish soul”, sporting the Phrygian Republican cap while under attack by German aircrafts. The textual description refers to Nazi and Italian support of the Nationalist faction amidst the Democratic powers abandonment of the Republic, emphasizing European indifference and “Yankee self-interest”.

Colección de 18 viñetas del dibujante José Valdés Cadilla. Esta colección se publicó en el periódico <em>La voz</em> de Nueva York entre marzo y julio de 1938. Casi todas las imágenes vienen acompañadas de un texto escrito que ayuda a explicar las sutilezas de la escena. Trece de estas imágenes forman parte una colección titulada “Estampas de Harlem” y son escenas costumbristas, irónicas, críticas y/o humorísticas que retratan a los vecinos del barrio. Estas viñetas documentan la vida cotidiana y también los retos y logros de esa vecindad mayoritariamente hispana y latina. Cuatro dibujos conmemoran fechas y eventos especiales: el séptimo aniversario de la República Española, el homenaje a las madres españolas, el segundo aniversario de la Guerra Civil o el primero de Mayo. El retrato de Fernando de los Ríos es una imagen inédita que pertenece a una colección particular. <br />Los pocos datos que se conocen sobre José Valdés Cadilla provienen del censo de los Estados Unidos. Nació en San Juan (Puerto Rico) en 1908, su madre era puertorriqueña y su padre español. José y sus cuatro hermanxs se quedaron huérfanos muy pronto y se mudaron a vivir a Arecibo con unos tíos. Esta viñeta refleja a la perfección la diversidad cultural de Nueva York representada en estxs tres vecinxs que viajan en metro juntxs desde el barrio de Harlem. El texto describe a lxs pasajerxs: Maruja es una mujer “latina” moderna, profesional y de ideología democrática que está leyendo <em>La voz</em> camino del trabajo. Está sentada junto a Cohen, un señor judío que lee el periódico yiddish <em>El judío mañanero</em> (concretamente noticias sobre los decretos de Hitler contra los judíos) y al lado del italiano Vitorio que lee el periódico <em>Il Popolo.</em>
This sketch wholly reflects New York City’s cultural diversity, as represented by three residents riding the subway together in Harlem. The caption describes the passengers: Maruja, a modern, professional Latina of democratic ideals, reads <em>La voz</em> on her way to work. She is seated beside Cohen, a Jewish gentleman who is reading the Yiddish newspaper, <em>The Jewish Morning </em>(he reads an article regarding Hitler’s decree against Jews). La escena representa el juego de “los tres dedales” -denominado en España “trilé”- y comenta que, supuestamente, se importó desde San Juan a Nueva York en los años treinta. Explica el funcionamiento de la estafa que invita a hacer apuestas para localizar un granito bajo uno de los tres dedales. Se explica el modus operandi: otra persona actúa de "gancho" y quien apuesta nunca acierta dónde está el granito. El texto documenta quiénes llevan a cabo este timo y en qué zonas de Harlem operan.
<p>The scene represents “the three thimbles” game—known in Spain as “trilé”—noting that it was supposedly brought by migrants from San Juan who moved to New York City in the 1930s. The image portrays how the scam operates, enticing players to bet on which of the three thimbles the kernel can be found under. The modus operandi is described: one person works as the “bait”, ensuring that the one who guesses the location of the kernel can never do so correctly. The textual description names who perform the prank and the areas of Harlem in which they operate.</p>

Colección de 18 viñetas del dibujante José Valdés Cadilla. Esta colección se publicó en el periódico <em>La voz</em> de Nueva York entre marzo y julio de 1938. Casi todas las imágenes vienen acompañadas de un texto escrito que ayuda a explicar las sutilezas de la escena. Trece de estas imágenes forman parte una colección titulada “Estampas de Harlem” y son escenas costumbristas, irónicas, críticas y/o humorísticas que retratan a los vecinos del barrio. Estas viñetas documentan la vida cotidiana y también los retos y logros de esa vecindad mayoritariamente hispana y latina. Cuatro dibujos conmemoran fechas y eventos especiales: el séptimo aniversario de la República Española, el homenaje a las madres españolas, el segundo aniversario de la Guerra Civil o el primero de Mayo. El retrato de Fernando de los Ríos es una imagen inédita que pertenece a una colección particular. <br />Los pocos datos que se conocen sobre José Valdés Cadilla provienen del censo de los Estados Unidos. Nació en San Juan (Puerto Rico) en 1908, su madre era puertorriqueña y su padre español. José y sus cuatro hermanxs se quedaron huérfanos muy pronto y se mudaron a vivir a Arecibo con unos tíos. En los años treinta Valdés Cadilla vivía en Nueva York y en 1953 seguía residiendo en la ciudad, pues fue el pintor encargado de dibujar un fresco alegórico para las honras fúnebres de Julia de Burgos. <span>El periódico <em>La voz</em> lo describe como un "bohemio consuetudinario en perenne regeneración, Valdés Cadilla ha vivido de cerca la tragedia de muchos hispanos en esta Babel inmisericorde y sabe como pocos del duro aguijonazo del dolor neoyorquino.” (<em>La voz</em> 1938-03-26, p. 12). </span>Hasta el momento, ha sido imposible localizar ningún otro dato sobre este dibujante de gran talento, creador de esta magnífica breve colección de viñetas que ofrecen una singular panorámica costumbrista de Harlem en los años treinta.<br /><em>La voz</em> describe así esta colección de documentos: "Es esta una valiosa colección de "Cuadros costumbristas de Harlem", representativos de escenas, personajes y costumbres típicas del corazón hispano de Nueva York. En ellos se plantea, con sobriedad de rasgos y riqueza de expresión, muchos de los graves problemas que aquejan a la colectividad y cuya solución se hace cada día más imperiosa. A collection of eighteen sketches by José Valdés Cadilla. This collection was published in the newspaper <em>La voz</em> (New York) from April through July of 1938. Every image is accompanied by a written description that helps explain the nuances within the drawing. Thirteen of the images are part of a collection entitled “Estampas de Harlem” (“Scenes from Harlem”). These ironic, critical, and/or humoristic scenes capture the neighborhood residents and their local customs. These sketches illustrate everyday life, the customs and festivities, but also the difficulties, challenges, and achievements of the primarily Hispanic and Latino community. <br />There are four drawings that commemorate special dates and events: the seventh anniversary of the Spanish Republic, a tribute to Spanish mothers, the second anniversary of the Civil War, and International Workers Day. The portrait of Fernando de los Ríos has never been published as it belongs to a private collection. <br />There is little data about Puerto Rican artist José Valdés Cadilla. He was born in San Juan (Puerto Rico) in 1908. His mother was Puertorrican and his father was from Spain and worked at the tobacco factory. José and his four siblings were orphaned in childhood and moved to Arecibo to live with some relatives. In the 1930s Valdés Cadilla was living in New York. In 1953 he still lived in the city as he painted an allegorical fresco for Julia de Burgos´ funeral services. <span>The newspaper <em>La voz</em> described him as a “bohemian in permanent regeneration, Valdés Cadilla has lived the tragedy of many Hispanics in this merciless Babel, and he knows about the cruel bite of New York´s pain” (La voz 1938-03-26, p. 12). </span>Until now, it has been impossible to obtain any additional information about this talented artist and creator of this short-lived but brilliant collection of sketches that offers an exceptional panorama of everyday life in Harlem during the 1930s. La imagen representa a lxs vecinxs de Harlem más necesitadxs, esperando que llegue el cartero el día 15 y 1 de cada mes para entregarles el cheque de ayuda social que el texto describe como una especie de “maná”, pues se espera ansiosamente para poder pagar las cuentas pendientes. El texto utiliza un tono satírico, insinuando que algunos residente podrían utilizar su tiempo buscando trabajo en vez de esperar la llegada de estos cheques.
The print represents the most disadvantaged residents of Harlem as they wait for the mailman to deliver their welfare checks on the 15th and 1st of every month. He’s designated as a kind of “godsend” as the residents eagerly anticipate their deliveries in order to pay pending bills. The text uses a satirical tone, insinuating that some of the residents could make better use of their time by looking for a job rather than awaiting the arrival of these checks.

La viñeta se publica en el número especial del Primero de Mayo, Día de los Trabajadores. Se representa a un obrero fuerte y victorioso que alza el puño sobre un fondo de talleres y chimeneas. El texto destaca la solidaridad y pujanza de la masa obrera y los sindicatos frente al enemigo común, representado en la parte inferior de la imagen: el capitalista que se parapeta entre su mesa de trabajo (con un retrato de Mussolini), su caja de caudales y un perchero con la esvástica, estableciendo un poderoso vínculo entre fascismo y capitalismo.
The sketch was published in a special May 1st issue, in recognition of International Workers’ Day. A robust and victorious laborer is depicted, raising his fist amidst a background of workshops and chimneys. The text underscores the solidarity and strength of the working classes and unions against a common enemy, as depicted at the bottom of the print: the capitalist takes refuge at his desk (upon which a portrait of Mussolini is observed), and amidst his safe, and coatrack, upon which an image of a swastika can be observed. The print thus establishes a powerful link between fascism and capitalism.
