Y seguimos con la influenza…… &lt;br /&gt;Esto no quiere decir que esté yo influenzado, ni que lo haya estado, ni que lo quiera estar…… [¡]Líbreme Dios de ello! Quiero decir que la “spanish flu,” como aquí le dicen ahora, continúa siendo lo único que nos trae ocupados en San Francisco, islas adyacentes y posesiones de ultramar como Berkeley, Oakland, Alameda, etc., etc., etc. &lt;br /&gt;Unos porque ya les dió, otros porque le tienen miedo y otros porque se han visto privados de rigodeos y diversiones; el caso en que a todos los sanfranciscanos lo que más les preocupa ahora, es la influenza, gripe, garrotazo o como se quiera llamarle según su amplia sinonimia. &lt;br /&gt;No son únicamente las nurses y los doctores los que están entrerados de cómo y cuando se cura la “flu” cada señora de casa, tiene su remedio eficacísimo, y el que se muere o se pone malo a pesar de los cuidados de familia y de los remedios caseros, es porque es un desconsiderado, un mal agradecido y un tonto. &lt;br /&gt;O, en otros casos, como el del cuarto esposo de una amiga mía, gallega, llamada Pilar Antúnez, la influenza no ha sido, “spanish” legítima, sino falsificada. &lt;br /&gt;¿Cree usted, me decía la Pilarica, que mi Servodeo se me hubiera muerto de “spanish” influenza? ¡Imposible! Cómo no iba yo a conocer esa enfermedad, si [¡]soy de la pura España! Con sebo azufrado, la curo en un día. Lo que sucedió fué que al difunto “le pegó” otra influenza, la más perra, la más mala, que, como usted debe comprender, es la “german flu.” Naturalmente, se murió…… &lt;br /&gt;–Naturalmente, le contesté. &lt;br /&gt;Con todo lo que se ha dicho, escrito y propalado en estos días, acerca de los medios preventivos, calmativos, curativos, enterrativos de la “flu”, pudieran formarse muchos volúmenes, de alta, fecunda y hermosa literatura “influenzanesca.” &lt;br /&gt;Si nos pusiéramos a seguir todos los consejos “higiénicos,” a poner en práctica todos los medicamentos que la ciencia y la experiencia indican, nos pasaríamos las veinticuatro horas del día con los pies metidos en agua caliente, la cabeza en agua fría, y los labios en agua ardiente o en agua fuerte. &lt;br /&gt;Cada individuo se cree obligado a dar un consejo “muy conveniente.” &lt;br /&gt;“Luego que usted se levante, váyase derechito al ‘closet’,” dice uno. &lt;br /&gt;“Beba agua hasta que la vomite,” dice otro. &lt;br /&gt;“Lávese las narices con un cepillo de dientes,” exclama otro. &lt;br /&gt;Y no falta quien aconseje que se beba whisky hasta que todos los microbios se emborrachen, se salgan del cuerpo y dejen al enfermo en paz. &lt;br /&gt;Uno de los doctores más acreditados y más prácticos publicó, por medio de la prensa, el siguiente interesante consejo: “Maridos, maridos, no beséis a vuestras mujeres.” &lt;br /&gt;Bueno, [¡]digo yo! ¿A quién vamos a besar entonces, si son las únicas que se dejan sin hacer mucho alboroto.? &lt;br /&gt;Si la Higiene y la Profilaxis permiten que bese uno a las “nurses,” por ejemplo, no tengo inconveniente en hacerlo con todas las reglas de la ciencia, en el concepto de que, lo único que pido, para mi salud y para que la epidemia no se ponga pesada, es que no me pongan nurses ni viejas ni feas porque otro doctor muy inteligente dice que no hay para que sanen los enfermos de gríppe [gripe], como que se les haga la vida agradable. &lt;br /&gt;A darle, pues. &lt;br /&gt;Aunque no he sido víctima directa de la influenza, lo he sido de las malas influencias que ésta desarrolla. El jueves fui a los “movies” y como apareció en la pantalla una vista donde se representaba un invierno rigurosísimo, con sus correspondientes amontonamientos de nieve, me resfrié un poquillo y cuando menos pensé: &lt;br /&gt;...¡¡¡Achís!!! (Un estornudo.) &lt;br /&gt;El “usher” mayor se dirigió a mí violentamente, me tomó del brazo, me levantó del asiento y me encaminó hacia la puerta… Con la prohibición crece el apetito y estornudé de nuevo. Entonces aquel hombre me puso máscara contra estornudos y en tan triste figura me entregó a la policía para que me pudieran “desenmicrobiar.” Por fortuna resulté sin fiebre, sin garrotillo, sin catarro y sin microbios, por lo que se me quitó la máscara y se me puso en absoluta libertad… &lt;br /&gt;Los médicos dicen que no hay por &lt;br /&gt;(Pasa a la sexta Plana) &lt;br /&gt;CRONICA DIABOLICA &lt;br /&gt;(Viene de la quinta Plana) &lt;br /&gt;qué alarmarse, que no es nada lo del ojo y lo de las narices, y que lo único que hay que hacer cuando se presente el trancazo, es resistirlo. &lt;br /&gt;¡Ni Pero Grullo podía dar mejor consejo! &lt;br /&gt;Y uno de los médicos más tranquilizadores de la humanidad dice más o menos, lo siguiente: La influenza no vale un comino. Cuando es ligera, tres días de fiebre, otros tantos de dolor de cabeza, dolor de huesos, dolo[re]s de espalda, dolor de pecho y dolores por todos lados: Cuando el acceso es grave, la cosa resulta más sencilla: dos días de dolores, tres de pulmonía, dos de gravedad y…… al “undertaking.” &lt;br /&gt;¡Realmente, cualquiera se tranquiliza con eso! &lt;br /&gt;Y aquí dejo las cosas, porque, observador de cuanto aconseja la higiene, voy a darme un sudor frío, preguntando al dueño de la casa [¡]a cuánto asciende el pico pendiente por renta……!—Jorge ULICA—“Hispano América.”</text>
