Hispanic and African American communities were among those most affected by this health crisis, as they lacked access to medicine, hospitals and even dignified burials or cemetery spaces in the United States under Jim Crow laws. Meanwhile, white upper-class patients received prompt medical attention and those who succumbed to the illness were mourned publicly, making them more visible even in death.
