El Imparcial de Texas published an article titled "Se recomienda una cuarentena de tres años" ["A Three-Year Quarantine Recommended"], which recalls the duration of the recent COVID-19 pandemic quarantine. Scholars such as Mario Ramírez have analyzed the parallels between the two health crises’ preventative measures in articles such as in Between Two Pandemics: The Spanish Flu and COVID-19 (2021). The newspapers from 1918 to 1919 highlighted similar precautions as those used in 2020: quarantines, masks, social distancing and closure of public spaces (theaters, cinemas, schools and military training spaces). These articles also emphasized measures to prevent viral exposure, such as abstaining from spitting, avoiding kisses and covering one’s mouth when coughing.
