Many news items published about the disease promoted home remedies and alternative medicines marketed to vulnerable communities, offering miracle products, natural remedies or specialized cures. One popular product was Tanlac, a wine, glycerin and bitter herb formula that claimed to combat respiratory illnesses ("80 Years"). Advertisements for such products often featured doctors’ names, like Mr. Edward Reno, who endorsed Tanlac through his personal testimony in news articles.
